My knowledge is informed by nearly 20 years of work in diverse educational environments and has been shaped by my personal experiences as a student and an educator. As a daughter of expats, I experienced first-hand what it's like to navigate a new culture and This fuels my desire to support families who are unfamiliar with U.S. educational practices.
I am versed in traditional, non-traditional, online and hybrid/blended learning environments. My unique experiences have given me a deep understanding of curricula and methodology as it varies to the needs of different learners. My teaching career began when I taught English language in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Caracas, Venezuela. I went on to teach Spanish language for nearly a decade in the United States to secondary, collegiate, and adult students.
My experience as a teacher made me privy to a disconnect between academics and the real world. I started Realiteach with a desire to bring relevance back into learning by connecting students to experiential learning opportunities through which they can grow before making further educational decisions.
My thesis research examined the stories of students who had taken time off before going to college. Through their stories I discovered first-hand the developmental impact of a bridge year and vowed to be an advocate for this underutilized option for high school graduates. In 2017, I received the Karl Haigler Award for Excellence in Gap Year Research from the Gap Year Association where I continue to serve as an active member of the GYA Research Committee.
Yoga philosophy and practice has had an enormous impact on my life and is an integral part of my work. I love practicing and teaching yoga, traveling, and immersing myself in the great outdoors. I have resided in Charlotte, NC, since 2001 and regularly visit schools around the country (and abroad) to stay abreast of innovation and change happening in education.
